Vodafone Gains in New Zealand Mobile Market, Outpacing Telecom
May 22, 2008
Vodafone Group Plc, the world's biggest mobile phone company by revenue, won the majority of new customers in New Zealand in the first quarter, maintaining its advantage over rival Telecom Corp.
Vodafone added 57,000 customers in the three months ended March 31, taking total subscribers to 2.37 million, the Newbury, England-based company said in a report posted on its Web site. Telecom added 41,000 customers in the same period and has 2.16 million connections, the Wellington-based company said May 2.
Telecom and Vodafone are battling for more of the nation's $1.4 billion mobile phone market by reducing costs and adding services. As total connections now exceed New Zealand's 4.3 million population, growth is expected to slow and come from customers switching providers or buying more than one handset.
Voice minutes, a measure of how much people are using their phones, rose 17 percent to 904 million in the latest quarter from a year earlier, Vodafone said. Telecom's call minutes fell 3.3 percent in the same period to 347 million.
Average revenue per user rose 3.7 percent to NZ$51.10 ($40) in the quarter, Vodafone said. Telecom revenue per user fell 13 percent to NZ$28 in the same period.
